Mingqi Ma (b. China) is a fiber artist based in San Francisco and an MFA candidate at California College of the Arts. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Ma’s artistic practice pays homage to historical traditions imagining a future where cultural preservation and innovation can harmoniously coexist. Rooted in Chinese cultural narratives, her practice reflects on the gradual disappearance of traditional skills and forms of knowledge. She works with materials that carry cultural and historical memory, including raffia, wool, cotton, abaca, and gold thread. Through these materials and processes, she invites viewers to reflect on the role of heritage in their own lives by considering the universal challenges of identity, continuity, and transformation, questioning how cultural traditions might endure and evolve in contemporary society.

Ma’s work has been featured in exhibitions including “Interwoven Horizons”, the 13th From Lausanne to Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale Exhibition (Tsinghua University Art Museum, Beijing, 2025); Trace (SAIC Galleries, Chicago, 2024); and Centerline (Zhou B ArtCenter, Chicago, 2024).
